National language support in NFTP 1.10+

New NLS support in NFTP

Starting from version 1.10, NFTP can be easily adapted to nearly any language (assuming operating system provides support for this language). I am not a linguist, so I will produce only English and Russian versions. But you can help me to translate NFTP into your national language. Your work will be included into NFTP distribution.

Here are guidelines:

  1. Language files are included into NFTP distribution (if you have installed NFTP, they are in the 'nls' subdirectory). Pick one you like to translate from. I recommend English because it's the source (no, Russian is not the original, it's a translation!).
  2. Examine it and try to decide whether you can translate it into your language.
  3. If you think that there shouldn't be any problems, mail me and tell that you're going to translate NFTP into XYZ language. Explanation of format is in english.nls/mnu; if you have any questions, feel free to ask them.
  4. After confirmation that nobody is already working on it, do translation, rename file into XYZ.nls and send it to me (uuencoded or attached). Of course, you can easily test your translation with NFTP. With versions 1.50 and up, rename your translated files into some other language known for NFTP (e.g., to russian.nls and russian.mnu) to do the testing.
When doing translation, consider the following:
  1. I update NLS files from time to time. So get them just before you going to translate. I do not require from you to monitor the latest version, but do not start with outdated file.
  2. By undertaking translation you take some sort of duty: when I am going to release new version, I will ask you to update NLS/MNU files (translate additional strings/messages). Updates are usually small (one screen of text is typical).
  3. Do not forget to give yourself a credit -- the appropriate line is in M_HLP_MAIN.
  4. I will support only English and Russian versions. Questions specific for other versions (wrong translation, bad grammar etc.) will be directed to translator.
